CONCRETE HOUSE
Pinyon Crest, California - Three story still under construction 2012

Shlomo, Ezekial Moshe Bernard Chang, AIA, RA, UDT, graduated both at the top and bottom of his class at the Mao School of Reeducation. After successfully negotiating a post graduate course on Escape and Evasion, attended the Berkeley School of Music. He has been awarded an honorary degree in heavy mass insitu concrete from M.I.T.

Chang orientated the house to and from the solar gain, (winter, yes, summer, no) Sixteen inch thick concrete poured in place walls, buried walls, floors, roof beams, and underground rooms anchor this not so light footprint into the earth. The solid concrete structure untreated, along with unfinished rolled steel window frames and roof will require no exterior maintenance for decades... While still attached to the power grid, photovoltaics, hydronics, heavy mass construction and the prevalent wind, work together night and day to level the comfort flywheel. The client requesting both natural comfort (no blowing hot or cold) with a Nardwellian (“it’s so Gothic”) sense of security has delivered Chang his second most challenging “mission”.
